What Are Shopify Payment Method Rules?

Payment method rules let you control which payment options appear at Shopify checkout based on the shopper's location. You can hide a method (so it doesn't show for certain regions), show a method only in certain regions, rename a method (change how it appears at checkout), or reorder methods to promote a preferred option.

Shopify's native checkout settings apply payment methods globally — every shopper sees the same options. Payment method rules add location-aware logic so your checkout adapts to the shopper's geography.

Lokally implements these rules via Shopify Functions, which run server-side at checkout on Shopify's infrastructure. This is the only approach that genuinely controls the checkout — not just what's displayed on the storefront.

How Lokally Solves This

Four Rule Types — Hide, Show, Rename, Reorder

Hide: Remove a payment method from checkout for shoppers in specified locations. Most commonly used to hide COD in high-RTO pincodes.

Show: Display a payment method only for shoppers in specified locations. Useful for regional payment options that should only appear in certain areas.

Rename: Change the display name of a payment method for shoppers in specified locations. For example, rename 'Cash on Delivery' to 'Pay on Delivery' or 'Door Delivery' for specific regions.

Reorder: Change the order in which payment methods appear at checkout for shoppers in specified locations. Promoting UPI to the top for metro shoppers increases prepaid conversion rates.

Combine Multiple Rules

Multiple rules can be active simultaneously. For example: hide COD in 500 high-RTO pincodes, rename COD to 'Pay on Delivery' for the rest of India, and reorder UPI to the top position for all metro shoppers — all three rules active at the same time.

Rules are evaluated together at checkout and applied in combination. There is no limit on the number of active payment rules.

Real-World Examples

D2C Beauty Brand

Hid COD for 800 high-RTO pincodes, renamed COD to 'Pay on Delivery' (more neutral tone) for the rest, and promoted UPI to first position for all shoppers.

Overall RTO dropped 28%. UPI share of orders increased from 31% to 47% without any marketing push.

Grocery Delivery Brand

COD available only in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where card/UPI adoption is lower. Metro shoppers see only UPI and card options.

Zero RTO from metro orders. Tier 2/3 COD conversion rate maintained — those shoppers were genuinely COD-dependent.

Premium Skincare Brand

Removed COD completely for orders above ₹2,500 (high-value items where RTO cost is highest), kept COD for sub-₹2,500 orders.

High-value RTO dropped from 22% to 4%. Low-value COD orders maintained healthy conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What four types of payment method rules does Lokally support?

Hide: remove a payment method for shoppers in specific regions. Show: display a payment method only for shoppers in specific regions. Rename: change the display name of a payment method per region (e.g. rename 'Cash on Delivery' to 'Pay on Delivery'). Reorder: change the order in which payment methods appear at checkout to promote a preferred method.

Can I hide COD for specific pincodes only?

Yes. Lokally's hide rule supports pincode, city, state, and country as the target location. You can block COD in specific high-RTO pincodes while keeping it available everywhere else.

Can I rename 'Cash on Delivery' to 'Pay on Delivery'?

Yes. The rename rule changes the display name shown at checkout for shoppers matching the location. You can rename any payment method for any location combination.

Can I reorder payment methods so UPI appears first?

Yes. The reorder rule lets you specify the order in which payment methods appear at checkout for shoppers in a target location. For example: UPI first, then cards, then COD — for shoppers in metros where UPI adoption is highest.

Does this work with all Shopify payment gateways?

Yes. Lokally's payment method rules work via Shopify Functions, which applies to all payment methods available in your checkout regardless of the gateway (Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, Shopify Payments, etc.).

Can I show a payment method only in certain regions?

Yes. The show rule hides a payment method by default and shows it only for shoppers in specified locations. Useful for regional payment methods that are not relevant globally.

Can I combine multiple payment rules?

Yes. You can have multiple rules active simultaneously. For example: hide COD in 500 high-RTO pincodes, rename COD to 'Pay on Delivery' in the rest, and reorder UPI to the top for all metro shoppers — all active at the same time.
