What Are Shopify Payment Method Rules?
Payment method rules let you control which payment options appear at Shopify checkout based on the shopper's location. You can hide a method in some regions, show a method in a region where it is otherwise hidden, rename a method, or hide cash on delivery above an order value.
Shopify's native checkout settings apply payment methods globally - every shopper sees the same options. Payment method rules add location-aware logic so your checkout adapts to the shopper's geography.
Lokally implements these rules via Shopify Functions, which run server-side at checkout on Shopify's infrastructure. This is the only approach that genuinely controls the checkout - not just what's displayed on the storefront.

Combine Multiple Rules
Several rules can be active at once. For example: hide COD in a region of high-RTO pincodes, rename COD to 'Pay on Delivery' for the rest of India, and hide COD above an order value for all regions.
Rules for a specific region take priority over rules for all regions, so you can make exceptions without rebuilding everything.
How to set it up
- Step 1
Install Lokally
Install Lokally from the Shopify App Store and choose a plan. New subscriptions start with a 7-day free trial, billed through Shopify.
- Step 2
Create your regions
In Lokally, go to Regions and add a region for each area. Paste its pincodes (one per line or comma-separated), or use ranges (400001-400099) and wildcards (40*) to cover a city or a whole state.
- Step 3
Load your payment methods
Go to Payment rules and click Reload payment methods to find the methods used in your recent orders, or add a method by name exactly as it appears at checkout.
- Step 4
Add a rule
On a payment method, click Add Rule: always hide it, rename it, or show it in a region where an all-regions rule hides it.
- Step 5
Limit cash on delivery by order value
Optionally, in the Cash on delivery limit card, hide paid-on-delivery methods above an order value, for all regions or per region.

Save
Rules apply at checkout straight away, based on the shopper's delivery pincode.

Can I show a payment method only in certain regions?
