How to Set Different Prices by Pincode on Shopify

Shopify has one price for all customers by default. For Indian brands with markets spanning Tier 1 metros to Tier 3 towns, one price means either underpricing in metros or overpricing in smaller markets — or both.

This guide walks you through setting up pincode-level pricing on Shopify using Lokally.

Why Pincode Pricing Matters for Indian Brands

Indian consumers have significantly different price sensitivity by location:

  • Metro shoppers (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune) have higher disposable income and lower price sensitivity for quality goods
  • Tier 2 shoppers (Jaipur, Lucknow, Surat, Indore, Bhopal) are price-conscious but convert well with modest discounts
  • Tier 3 shoppers (smaller cities and towns) often need meaningful price reduction to justify online purchase vs. local market

A single national price satisfies none of these segments optimally. Metros could bear a premium. Tier 2 and 3 shoppers might not convert at metro prices but will at a modest discount.

The economic theory here is basic: charge closer to each segment's willingness to pay. The execution challenge is that Shopify doesn't offer native pincode-level pricing — that's what Lokally solves.

Before You Start: Classify Your Pincodes

The first step is grouping your target pincodes into pricing zones.

Option 1: Use your existing order data

Export your Shopify orders (Admin → Orders → Export). In the CSV, find the Shipping Zip column. Classify each unique pincode into your tier system. Use the last 6 months for relevance.

Option 2: Use known metro and Tier 2 pincode ranges

Common metro pincodes:

  • Mumbai: 400001–400104
  • Delhi/NCR: 110001–110096, 201001–201318
  • Bangalore: 560001–560100
  • Chennai: 600001–600119
  • Hyderabad: 500001–500100
  • Pune: 411001–411062

Tier 2 cities have their own pincode ranges (e.g., Jaipur 302001–302042, Lucknow 226001–226030). A quick search for "Tier 2 India cities pincode list" will give you a CSV you can import.

Setting Up Pricing Rules in Lokally

Step 1: Install Lokally

Install Lokally from the Shopify App Store (7-day free trial, no credit card). Open the Lokally dashboard from your Shopify Admin → Apps → Lokally.

Step 2: Create a pricing rule for each tier

Navigate to Regional Pricing → New Rule.

For each tier:

  1. Select Pincode as the location type
  2. Upload your pincode CSV for this tier (one pincode per row)
  3. Set the price adjustment:
    • Metro: no change, or +₹50–100 if you want premium positioning
    • Tier 2: −5% or a fixed amount like −₹50
    • Tier 3: −10% or a fixed amount like −₹100
  4. Optionally scope to specific product collections (useful if only some products need regional pricing)
  5. Save the rule

Repeat for each tier zone.

Step 3: Verify at checkout

Use a test customer account. Add any product to the cart. Enter a pincode from each tier at the pincode widget step. Verify the correct price shows at each pincode zone before proceeding to checkout.

Common Questions

What if a shopper's pincode isn't in any rule?

The default (national) price applies. Rules only activate for pincodes explicitly included.

What about products with many variants?

Lokally pricing rules apply to the final calculated variant price. A −10% rule applies to whichever variant the shopper selects.

Can I use both a percentage and a fixed discount?

Each rule uses one type. Create separate rules if you need both — they apply to different pincode sets.

Combining with COD Restrictions

Many brands combine pincode pricing with COD restrictions:

  • Tier 2/3 shoppers get lower prices (drives conversion)
  • High-RTO pincodes within those same tiers get COD blocked (reduces returns)

See How to Reduce Shopify RTO with COD Restrictions for the complementary setup.

Monitoring Results

After 4 weeks:

  1. Export orders from Shopify Admin → Orders → Export
  2. Filter by customer shipping pincode zone
  3. Compare conversion rate and average order value per zone vs. your baseline (pre-Lokally)

Regional pricing typically shows 15–30% conversion improvement in Tier 2/3 markets within the first month. Metro pricing adjustments (if you raised prices) usually show flat conversion with higher revenue per order.

Summary

Pincode-based pricing on Shopify requires an app like Lokally because Shopify's native pricing is flat across all geographies. Setup takes under 2 hours: classify pincodes, create 2–3 pricing rules, upload CSVs, verify at checkout. Monitor conversion per zone after 4 weeks and iterate.
