Shopify Payment Method Rules by Pincode: Show, Hide, Rename, and Reorder

Shopify's native checkout shows the same payment methods to every customer. Lokally adds location-aware payment rules that change what methods appear — based on pincode, city, or state. There are four rule types: Hide, Show, Rename, and Reorder.

Rule Type 1: Hide

Removes a payment method from checkout for a specific location.

Primary use case: Hiding COD for high-RTO pincodes.

Setup:

  1. Lokally → Payment Rules → New Rule → Hide
  2. Select payment method: Cash on Delivery (or any other method)
  3. Select location: Pincode (upload CSV), City, or State
  4. Optional scope: specific product collections or price thresholds
  5. Save

What shoppers see: The hidden method simply doesn't appear in checkout. If COD is hidden, shoppers see only prepaid options (UPI, cards, wallets, net banking).

Important: Set the Lokally widget message for hidden COD pincodes so shoppers know before they reach checkout.

Rule Type 2: Show

Makes a payment method visible only for a specific location (hidden everywhere else).

Primary use case: Showing a region-specific payment method (like a regional bank EMI offer) only in the states where it's relevant.

Secondary use case: Showing "Pay on Delivery" only in tier 1 metros where your logistics partner guarantees doorstep collection, keeping it hidden elsewhere.

Setup: Same as Hide but select Show as the action. The method will only appear for shoppers in the target location.

Rule Type 3: Rename

Changes the display name of a payment method for a specific location.

Use cases:

  • Rename "Cash on Delivery" to "Pay on Delivery" for metro areas where it's actually a more reliable doorstep collection service
  • Rename a generic "Net Banking" option to a regional bank's name for areas where that bank has high penetration
  • Add regional language context to a payment method name

Setup:

  1. Lokally → Payment Rules → New Rule → Rename
  2. Select the method to rename
  3. Enter the new display name
  4. Select location target
  5. Save

Limitation: This renames the displayed label only. The underlying payment gateway and processing don't change.

Rule Type 4: Reorder

Changes the order in which payment methods appear in checkout for a specific location.

Use cases:

  • Push UPI to the top in metros where UPI adoption is highest (drives prepaid conversion)
  • Push COD to the bottom in high-RTO areas where you want to discourage it without fully hiding it
  • Show EMI options prominently in high-AOV areas or for high-value products

Setup:

  1. Lokally → Payment Rules → New Rule → Reorder
  2. Drag payment methods into the desired order
  3. Select location target
  4. Save

Note: Reorder doesn't hide any methods — it just changes their position. Hiding a method requires a separate Hide rule.

Combining Rules

Rules of different types can be combined for the same location:

Example: High-RTO pincode strategy

  • Hide rule: Hide COD for the pincode CSV
  • Reorder rule: Push UPI to the top for the same pincodes (for non-blocked pincodes where you want to nudge prepaid)

Example: Metro premium experience

  • Reorder rule: UPI and cards at top in metro pincodes
  • Rename rule: "Cash on Delivery" → "Pay at Doorstep" for metro pincodes (where service is premium)

What Gets Affected

Payment rules affect the Shopify checkout experience. They are implemented via Shopify Functions, meaning:

  • The change happens at the actual checkout level (not a display trick)
  • It applies regardless of what device or browser the shopper uses
  • It works with Shopify's native order management and reporting

Testing

After setting up any payment rule:

  1. Open your storefront in incognito mode
  2. Add a product to cart
  3. Enter a target pincode in the Lokally widget
  4. Proceed to checkout — verify the rule is applying correctly
  5. Repeat with a non-target pincode to confirm default behaviour is unchanged

Summary

Lokally provides four payment rule types for location-aware checkout customisation on Shopify: Hide (remove a method for a location), Show (show a method only in a location), Rename (change the display name for a location), and Reorder (change method ordering for a location). The most common use case is hiding COD for high-RTO pincodes, but all four types can be combined for sophisticated payment experience customisation.
