Shopify Payment Method Rules by Pincode: Show, Hide and Rename

Shopify's native checkout shows the same payment methods to every customer. Lokally adds location-aware payment rules that change which methods appear, based on the region of the shopper's delivery pincode. There are three rule types (Hide, Show and Rename) plus a cash on delivery limit.

Before You Start

1. Create your regions: In Lokally → Regions, add a region for each area. Paste its pincodes (one per line or comma-separated), or use ranges (400001-400099) and wildcards (40*) to cover a city or a whole state.
2. Load your payment methods: In Lokally → Payment rules, click Reload payment methods to find the methods used in your recent orders, or add a method by name exactly as it appears at checkout.

Rule Type 1: Hide

Removes a payment method from checkout in a region.

Primary use case: Hiding COD for high-RTO pincodes.

Setup:

1. Lokally → Payment rules
2. On the payment method (for example Cash on Delivery), click Add Rule
3. Choose the region and Always hide
4. Save

What shoppers see: The hidden method simply doesn't appear in checkout. If COD is hidden, shoppers see only your other options (UPI, cards, wallets, net banking).

Tip: Tell shoppers before they reach checkout by setting a Lokally announcement bar message for that region in Storefront content.

Rule Type 2: Show

Shows a payment method in a region where an all-regions rule hides it. Together they make a method available only in chosen regions.

Use case: Offering "Pay on Delivery" only in metros where your logistics partner reliably collects at the doorstep.

Setup:

1. On the method, add a rule for all regions that hides it
2. Add a second rule for the metro region that shows it
3. Save

Rule Type 3: Rename

Changes the display name of a payment method in a region.

Use cases:

• Rename "Cash on Delivery" to "Pay on Delivery" for metro areas where it's actually a more reliable doorstep collection service
• Rename a generic "Net Banking" option to a regional bank's name for areas where that bank has high penetration
• Add regional language context to a payment method name

Setup:

1. On the method, click Add Rule
2. Choose the region and Rename
3. Enter the new display name
4. Save

Limitation: This renames the displayed label only. The underlying payment gateway and processing don't change.

Cash on Delivery Limit

Hides paid-on-delivery methods when the order value is above an amount, for all regions or per region.

Use case: Keep COD for everyday orders but require online payment for large orders, where a refused delivery costs the most.

Setup: In Lokally → Payment rules, use the Cash on delivery limit card.

Combining Rules

Rules can be combined across regions:

Example: High-RTO pincode strategy

• Hide COD in your High RTO region
• Set a COD limit for all other regions, so large orders elsewhere are prepaid

Example: Metro premium experience

• Rename "Cash on Delivery" to "Pay at Doorstep" in your metro region

What Gets Affected

Payment rules affect the Shopify checkout experience. They are implemented via Shopify Functions, meaning:

• The change happens inside Shopify's checkout, based on the delivery pincode
• It applies regardless of what device or browser the shopper uses
• It works with Shopify's native order management and reporting

Lokally doesn't reorder payment methods; Shopify's own payment settings control the order.

Testing

After setting up any payment rule:

1. Open your storefront in incognito mode
2. Add a product to cart and go to checkout
3. Enter a delivery address with a pincode in the target region - verify the rule applies
4. Change to a delivery pincode outside the region to confirm default behaviour is unchanged
