Shopify Markets vs Regional Pricing Apps: What Indian Brands Actually Need
Shopify Markets is a powerful feature. It genuinely solves the problem it was designed for: selling internationally with local currencies, duties, and language. But for Indian brands trying to set different prices in Maharashtra versus Karnataka, Shopify Markets creates more problems than it solves.
This post explains why — and what Indian brands actually need for domestic regional pricing.
What Shopify Markets Was Built For
Shopify Markets was designed to help brands sell in multiple countries. Its core features:
- Currency conversion: Show prices in USD for US customers, EUR for European customers
- International domains or subdomains: india.mybrand.com vs us.mybrand.com
- Duties and tax handling: Collect import duties at checkout for applicable countries
- Language localisation: Different language per market
These are genuinely useful for international expansion. An Indian brand selling to the US, UK, and Germany would benefit from all of them.
Why Shopify Markets Doesn't Solve India's Regional Pricing Problem
India is one country, one currency, one language family (mostly). The domestic regional pricing problem is different:
- Different price sensitivity by tier (metro vs Tier 2 vs Tier 3)
- Distributor territory pricing (different state-level pricing per distributor agreement)
- Festival campaigns by state (Navratri for Gujarat, Onam for Kerala)
- COD restriction by pincode (no COD for high-RTO pincodes)
- Content localisation by region (different banners for different states)
None of these map to Shopify Markets' international selling model. Markets works by geography at the country level, not the pincode or state level.
You could theoretically create "Markets" for different Indian regions — but Shopify charges per market, the configuration overhead is significant, and the feature set still doesn't include pincode-level targeting or COD payment method control.
What Lokally Adds
Lokally sits alongside Shopify (it doesn't replace anything) and adds the India-specific layer:
| Capability | Shopify Markets | Lokally |
|---|---|---|
| Different price per country | ✓ | — |
| Different price per Indian state | Limited | ✓ |
| Different price per pincode | No | ✓ |
| Hide COD by pincode | No | ✓ |
| Location-specific banners | No | ✓ |
| Festival campaign scheduling | No | ✓ |
| Works with one Shopify store | Yes | Yes |
| Designed for India domestic | No | Yes |
Lokally uses Shopify Functions — the same infrastructure Shopify uses for checkout customisation — to apply pricing and payment rules at the checkout level. The price shoppers see is the actual checkout price, not a display-layer trick.
The Honest Answer for Indian Brands
If you're selling internationally: use Shopify Markets. It's purpose-built for that.
If you need domestic India regional pricing, COD management, or state-specific campaigns: Shopify Markets won't help. Lokally is designed specifically for these use cases.
Most Indian brands that grow to pan-India scale will eventually need both: Shopify Markets for international expansion, Lokally for domestic regional complexity.
Summary
Shopify Markets and Lokally solve different problems. Markets handles international selling across countries. Lokally handles domestic regional complexity within India — pincode pricing, state campaigns, COD restriction, and location content. They are complementary, not competitive.
