Location-Based Content on Shopify: Show Different Banners by City or State
Shopify themes show the same content to every visitor. A banner about Navratri looks odd to a shopper in Tamil Nadu celebrating Navaratri for different reasons — or to a shopper in Assam celebrating Bihu instead. Yet native Shopify has no way to show different content per region.
Lokally's Location Content feature solves this: show a different banner, announcement bar, countdown timer, or product collection to shoppers based on their pincode, city, or state.
Location Content Block Types
Lokally provides four content block types:
1. Banner
A full-width or section-width image or HTML block that appears in a defined location on your storefront. Use cases:
- Festival-specific creative (Navratri for Gujarat, Onam for Kerala)
- Metro-exclusive launch announcements
- Regional shipping or delivery messaging
2. Announcement Bar
A top-of-page strip that shows a short text message for specific regions. Use cases:
- "Free delivery in Bangalore this week"
- "COD available only in your city"
- "Onam special: 15% off all home textiles"
3. Countdown Timer
A timer counting down to a deadline, visible only to shoppers in the target region. Use cases:
- Metro-exclusive launch countdown
- Festival sale end timer
- Regional flash sale
4. Product Visibility
Show or hide specific products or collections based on location. Use cases:
- Launch a product in metros only before national rollout
- Hide products not serviceable in certain states
- Show exclusive items to distributor territory customers
Setting Up a Location Content Rule
Step 1: Place the Location Content block
In your Shopify Theme Editor (Admin → Online Store → Customize), find the Lokally Location Content block in the Available Sections list. Add it to the position where you want content to appear (header area, hero section, product page).
This is a one-time setup — the same block shows any active Location Content rules in that position, dynamically.
Step 2: Create a content rule
In Lokally → Location Content → New Rule:
- Choose the block type (Banner, Announcement Bar, Countdown, or Product Visibility)
- Upload your creative or enter your message
- Select the location target: pincode (CSV), city, or state
- Set optional start and end dates
- Save and activate
Step 3: Test with pincode entry
In your storefront, enter a pincode from the target region in the Lokally widget. Verify the correct content appears. Enter a pincode from outside the target region — verify default content (or nothing) appears.
Targeting Options
Pincode: most precise, best for hyper-local campaigns or COD messaging for specific pincodes.
City: good for metro-first launches where you want to target all pincodes in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, etc., without a long pincode CSV.
State: best for regional festival campaigns where the entire state celebrates a particular festival (Gujarat for Navratri, Kerala for Onam, West Bengal for Durga Puja).
Content Rule Priority
When multiple content rules match a shopper's pincode, the most specific rule wins:
- Pincode rule beats city rule
- City rule beats state rule
- Multiple matching rules at the same level: the most recently created rule wins
Real-World Examples
Metro launch banner: An apparel brand launches a new collection for metro shoppers only. Location Content rule: Banner → metro pincodes → "Exclusive Metro Collection — Now Available" with hero creative. Non-metro shoppers see the standard storefront.
COD announcement: A brand wants to remind shoppers in high-RTO pincodes that COD is unavailable. Announcement Bar → target pincodes → "Prepaid only in your area — UPI and cards accepted." Prevents checkout drop-off from confused COD shoppers.
Festival countdown: An electronics brand runs a 3-day Dussehra sale for Rajasthan. Countdown Timer → Rajasthan state → "Sale ends in: [timer]". Only Rajasthan shoppers see the urgency timer.

Lokally Location Content lets you show different banners, messages, timers, and product visibility to shoppers based on their pincode, city, or state. Place the block in your Theme Editor once, then manage all content rules from the Lokally dashboard with full scheduling control.
